So, Sunday, Steve and I went to my mom's to gather some belongings we had left behind due to space issues in the little camper. As we were preparing to go, my mom and I heard a "bark" from the back yard. It was oddly similar to the Raptor call in Jurassic Park. I went around the back of the house and my mom went onto the screen porch. We found three sandhill cranes in her back yard. It appeared to be a father, mother and a baby.
We called Steve and my Dad to come take a look. My Dad is very fond of the sandhill cranes and immediately took up a perch on the wicher sofa to watch. My mom grabbed a handful of bird seed and tossed it out. As they came closer, she filled her hand again and the "father" began to eat right out it. The three of them danced around the yard pecking at the seed on the ground. We weren't sure if they were teaching the little one or fighting over it, but they would jump up and spread their wings in some kind of display. It was quite hilarious.
As I was loading a few more items, I hear my husband loudly clapping his hands and yelling. Curious, I headed back around to the back yard and find him holding a baby squirrel. The little thing has tightly latched onto his hand. My husband reports it fell out of the tree and the "father" crane quickly proceeded to try to stab it with his long beak - not once, but twice. My husband had scared it and rescued the squirrel. I told him to get rid of it quick or it's mother would not be happy. He said it was old enough that wouldn't happen. I still encouraged him to get it into a tree and quick.
He tried several times to place the squirrel in a tree. For whatever reason, the silly thing would not latch on, climb up or whatever it is they do. On the last attempt, the darn thing jumped out of the tree and raced across the driveway right up to Steve in expectation of being picked up again. Which....he did. He finally plaed it in the top of a bush and we hastily made our way to the car. As we were pulling out of the driveway, we heard the very loud squealing of the baby squirrel trying to get his mother's attention. My mom stood guard outside for some time until what appeared to be the mother came looking for him.
I was actually very proud of my husband for quickly coming to the rescue of this tiny creature. It made me realize that Christ does the same for us on a daily basis. "The Lord will resuce me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom." (2 Tim 4:18)
